A tribute to the Baiji River Dolphin of China (aka Yangtze river dolphin) that was declared 'functionally extinct' late last year. I've loved whales and dolphins since I was two years old and the Baiji was always one of my favorites. The permanent loss of such an ancient and beautiful creature is a very sad blow to the earth. It is very strange to look through my whale and dolphin books (some published only a year ago) and to see the Baiji smiling up at me, with the phrase "Critcally Endangered" next to it's name. The Finless Porpoise is now where the Baiji was 10 years ago...
